85,000 flu vaccine available as from next Monday

As from next Monday, October 25 the seasonal flu vaccine will be made available from health centres and 54 local councils, at a cost of €7.50 per vaccine. The vaccines have cost government €250,750.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Elderly Mario Galea today said that the seasonal flu kills more people than the H1N1 as its complications mainly effect elderly people.

“The seasonal flu is viral and highly contagious and its peak months are between October and May,” Galea said. “During winter more people choose to stay inside with closed windows. This increases the spread.”

Flu complications could lead to pneumonia, and in some cases this has led to death.

“The most effective way to reduce the symptoms of the flu is through the vaccine,” Galea said. “The vaccine  will be available throughout the whole winter. Some people are eligible for the free jab.”

Amongst others, people entitled to the free vaccine include health professionals and those who are in contact with patients or work at the elderly homes, the Police Force, the Armed Forces, the Civil Protection, staff who work at the detention and open centres, those who work within the veterinary services and farmers who breed chicken.

All those over 55, children aged between six months and four years and people suffering from chronic conditions are also eligible.

“According to the right of refusal, no one is forced to take the vaccine. However we appeal to everyone to take the vaccine to help decrease the spread,” Galea insisted, adding that each year the Government ends up throwing away an undisclosed amount of vaccines.

The health centres will be open from Monday to Friday from 10.30am till 1pm and on Saturday from 10am till noon. 54 local councils have also offered to administer the vaccine.
