Updated | Muscat travels to New York for UN General Assembly

On first full day in New York, Muscat holds meeting with leaders of Sri Lanka, Ghana, Antigua and Barbuda and Albania

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has travelled to New York to participate in the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

He will join around 190 other heads of state in discussing issues of global importance, including immigration, climate change and poverty.

The immigration debate is likely to focus on how the UN can play an active role in dealing with the conflicts in the refugees’ countries of origin.

On his first day, Muscat also held back-to-back meetings with the Presidents of Sri Lanka and Ghana, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and the Albanian foreign minister.

On Twitter, Muscat said that he “shared thoughts about migration” with Ghanian President John Dramani Mahma and discussed the “importance of climate change and CHOGM” with Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.

With the foreign minister of Albania, Ditmir Bushati, Muscat said Malta was willing “to share its experience” as the country as Albania seeks to join the European Union.

While in New York, Muscat will also address the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, advocating an end to extreme poverty.
