The Opposition Whip has questioned whether former acting police commissioner Ray Zammit has secret information about the Prime Minister that he is using as blackmail.

“It is clear that Joseph Muscat and [justice minister] Owen Bonnici are hostages of Ray Zammit,” David Agius said in a statement.

They questioned why Zammit has not been suspended from his new position as chief executive of a new local enforcement agency that will commence operations as of 1 October.

“As police commissioner, Zammit was involved in a government cover-up involving the driver of [former home affairs minister] Manuel Mallia. He had gone into business with the Gaffarena family at a time when he had held a top position within the police force, and his son [Daniel Zammit] had gone into the business with the family involved in a murder case that he was supposed to be investigating.

“If Muscat insists on trusting Ray Zammit, it will confirm that he is a Prime Minister who puts his own ego before the people’s interests.”
