272 suicides, 47 drug overdoses in past ten years
1,087 people have been admitted to Mount Carmel so far this year, with male patient admissions doubling female ones.
272 people committed suicide since 2005, and a further 47 people died from drug overdoses.
In response to a parliamentary question by Labour backbencher Silvio Schembri, home affairs minister Carmelo Abela revealed a massive gender gap in the number of recorded gaps – 243 victims were males, while 29 were females.
39 of the people who died from drug overdoses were male, while eight were female.
In response to a third parliamentary question by Schembri, health minister Konrad Mizzi said that 1,087 people have been admitted to Mount Carmel so far this year, 724 of whom were males and 362 of whom were females.
The median age of admission for males stood at 34 years, making it the youngest median age for both genders since 2004. The median age of admission for females stood at 44 years, a similar figure to those recorded over the past ten years.
