The Armed Forces inaugurated 19 new vehicles today, the largest consignment put into service at one go.

Home affairs minister Carmelo Abela said that the new vehicles, which arrived between June and September, would go a long way in helping the AFM carry out its duties.

The vehicles cost €650,000 and were funded entirely by the Maltese government.

The AFM received unprecedented investment this year, both local and from the EU, with €1.5 million in local funds alone having been used for several purposes, including new uniforms which cost some €500,000, bulletproof vests costing over €150,000 and radio systems costing some €130,000.

Abela said that as the AFM’s purpose was to meet the country’s needs, it was only right that the Forces received due support.

He further added that the vehicles came ahead of the much anticipated Valletta Summit, which would bring over over 80 delegations and the CHOGM meetings that will bring some 53 different delegations to the country.
