Woman, allegedly under influence, assaults assistant head, police officer
Police officer attacked by woman who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol
A woman who was allegedly drunk assaulted the assistant head of a Zejtun school and also attacked a female police officer.
The Malta Union of Teachers has condemned “the violent act” which allegedly saw the woman also assaulting a number of individuals working at the school.
“The MUT thanks the Police for its quick intervention to control the situation and expresses its solidarity with the police officer victim of aggression,” it said.
The teacher’s union reiterated that schools should have the necessary security measures in place. Despite pledges by the previous and present administration, little development took place.
The union urged the Ministry for Education to take the necessary steps in order to avoid such incidents from happening again.
It is understood that the woman went to pick up her son from school, seemingly unaware that her son had already gone home with her husband.
“She was drunk and walked into school after hours looking for her son, who had already been picked up by her husband. She attacked the secretary and assistant head and wreaked havoc in the office,” MUT President Kevin Bonello said.
It is understood that, in a bid to calm her down, the husband also rushed back to school.
Bonello went on to call on the Education Ministry to start tackling security issues seriously. “Every year we have some sort of serious incident because of lax security measures. The school’s head can’t monitor who goes in and out,” he said.
