Storm floods several areas, rain to persist
Police advise motorists to avoid areas prone to flooding, showers to persist
Motorists have been advised to avoid areas prone to flooding after strong winds and heavy rain hit the Maltese islands on Sunday.
A small sailing yacht broke its moorings and ran aground in Marsaskala this morning while flooding was reported in several areas, notably in Birkirkara, Iklin, Msida, Zejtun, as well as the recently opened Coast Road. Drivers had to reportedly drive on the opposite lane to avoid the water that had accumulated.
No injuries were reported.
Several water spouts were spotted off Rabat, Burmarrad, and Bahrija, while heavy rains hit Marsaskala, San Gwann, Qormi, and Birkirkara amongst other areas.
A number of Air Malta flights were delayed because of fog at the destination country. Two flights from Heathrow which were expected to arrive in Malta at 3:35pm have been delayed by more than six hours due to bad weather. Likewise, Flight KM100 to London Heathrow was delayed, while there were also delays to flights to Amsterdam and Paris.
The MET office has warned that some isolated showers will persists, while weather will remain cloudy.
