In the Press: Maltese fishermen warn of repercussions following court ruling

No appeal was filed from a judgment acquitting two foreigners of illegal fishing in Malta’s conservation zone. Maltese fishermen have warned of “massive repercussions”, arguing that the decision would set a precedent for future, similar cases and create competition in a zone which had been strictly regulated to protect the island’s fragile marine ecosystem.

A Libyan businessman Fahmi Slim Mousa Ben Khalifa said that an article published in the Asia Times contains unfounded allegations, insisting that he has no links whatsoever with the smuggling of humans, arms or diesel.

Shadow foreign minister Roberta Metsola said that the public deserves a proper explanation from the government, following a European Court of Auditors report that recommended the withholding of €11 million in EU funding for the Coast Road project, because Transport Malta did not respect public procurement rules.
