Air Malta | 'I would have preferred a more agressive reform' – PM Lawrence Gonzi
Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that, if it were up to him, the on-going Air Malta reform would have been “far more aggressive during these last three years.”
Speaking from Brussels during an EU summit, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi stressed that he is willing to do “everything possible” in trying to establish Malta’s national airline as “a viable company.”
He said that due to the increase in the international price of oil, coupled with the global financial crisis, and the European economic instability, he would have preferred that reform be implemented more aggressively.
“The government is committed to returning the organisation to viability,” Gonzi said, stressing that should it come to it, government should not hold back from letting it fend for itself.
Asked directly by journalists whether this included reducing the workforce, Gonzi was cautious in his reply, saying only that he was doing “everything possible”.
Gonzi added that talks with the EU are on-going ,with the aim of finding the best way forward.
Earlier this year, outgoing Air Malta chairman Lawrence Zammit had warned that not treating the airline as a national asset would be harmful to the country and the aspirations of its people.
