The process of the Constitutional Convention will be launched in the coming months, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said, adding that the time was ripe for an update of the island’s Constitution.

Flanked by members of the Labour Party, Muscat this morning attended a ceremony in front of the Republic Day monument marking 41 years since Malta became a republic.

It was Labour’s electoral pledge to enact a reform intended to give birth to what Muscat has described as a "Second Republic". Chaired by former PN MP Franco Debono, the government appointed a committee in preparation for the constitutional convention.

“We have waited enough,” Muscat said today, of the need to update the Constitution.

A call for the Nationalist Party to join the reform was made by the Prime Minister last week, following the launch of the Opposition’s good governance report. Muscat reiterated that a discussion was needed, led by civil society.
