Gozo tunnel movement condemns changes to Cirkewwa bus route

Front Favur il-Mina criticises public transport changes through which X1 bus from and to Cirkewwa no longer passes through Mater Dei

A group recently set up to campaign in favour of a proposed tunnel between Malta and Gozo has hit out at recent changes to the only express bus route from Cirkewwa to the centre of Malta.

In a statement, the Front Favur il-Mina questioned why the X1 bus no longer passes through Mater Dei, arguing that such a change will greatly inconvenience Gozitan students who live in Swatar or have to attend lectures at the hospital.

It also critcised the fact that the new X1 route now passes through the busy centre of Mellieha, meaning that the bus journey to and from Cirkewwa will take longer.

“Previously, missing the ferry by a few minutes was a common occurrence but this will now become the norm,” the front said. “For Gozitans, all this will mean an increase in hassle, waster of time and greater difficulty in planning their trips between the islands, apart from the great inconveniences caused.

“We call on the authorities to re-evaluate the recent changes to this route and hope that there will be further changes in the coming days, so as to alleviate these problems.”
