Police officers to receive CHOGM, Valletta Summit overtime payment in March

Home Affairs Minister confirms police officers will next month receive payment for extra hours worked

Police officers who worked extra hours during CHOGM and Valletta Summitt in November will be paid on 24 March, Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said in a reply to a parliamentary question by PN MP Ryan Callus.

The Malta Police Association yesterday warned that it would take all “necessary action” to ensure that police officers are paid for the extra hours.

According to the MPA, officers who worked during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and the Valletta Summit on Migration had worked more than 150 extra hours, or in excess of 75% of normal hours.

Insisting that the time had come for officers’ rights to be safeguarded, the MPA said it could not understand why the police administration had rejected the request for payment when the organising task force said there were funds to cover payment for the extra hours.
