Harsher traffic fines from next week, union says
Police Officers' union president says harsher fines will be introduced next week for drivers who ignore red traffic lights, drive on priority lanes, and use their mobile phones at the wheel
Traffic wines will increase next week, police officers’ union president Sandro Camilleri announced.
On a Facebook post, he said that drivers who ignore red traffic lights will be fined €100, while those who drive on priority vehicle lanes will be fined €50, and those use their mobile phones while driving will be fined €100.
Camilleri said that the POU, which is affiliated with the General Workers’ Union, had held a meeting with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat last week. During the meeting, the union urged him to introduce the harsher fines - that were originally announced in the Budget for 2016 - as quickly as possible.
