€100 bail for man who knifed brother in argument over carton of milk
A court has granted bail against a deposit of €100 to a man who was charged with the attempted murder of his brother during an argument over a carton of milk.
Unemployed 22 year-old Vince Spalding from Cospicua was charged under arrest by police after slashing his brother Cliff across his chest with a knife during an argument that allegedly developed over a carton of milk.
Cliff Spalding is still recovering in hospital.
Police also charged Vince Spalding of being a relapser and of committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended sentence imposed on him by a Magistrate’s Court.
Defence lawyer Mark Busuttil appealed for his client to be released on bail and told the court that Vince Spalding was able to live at his girlfriend’s house in Zurrieq, rather than having to return to the small house he shares with his injured brother.
Police Inspector Borg objected to bail and remarked that should bail be granted, Spalding would have to be asked for a deposit.
The accused however pointed out that he was unemployed and only earned €90 a week in unemployment and other benefits.
In her ruling, Magistrate Clare Stafrace Zammit granted Vince Spalding bail against a deposit of €100 and a personal guarantee of €20,000.
