AD calls for more support for persons with disability

n reaction to the conclusions of the ‘Vision for Disability’ seminar organized by the ‘Malta Federation of Organisations Persons with Disability’, Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party said that persons with disability require more support from the Government.

Nighat Urpani, AD spokesperson for Social Protection, said: "In the seminar several issues related to experiences of persons with disability, such as education, employment and Independent living were brought up. Engagement in all these sectors through informal education was highlighted as an important tool for social inclusion. In particular, rather than segregating persons with disability, the emphasis should be on increased investment  in secondary, post-secondary, tertiary and life-ling education that still leaves a lot to be desire, with an emphasis on inclusion. At the same time we acknowledge improvements made in primary education.

"In this regard, AD supports the development of community based supported living facilities and of inclusive policies and activities which enhance opportunities in spheres such as community participation, employment and education. Existing legislation such as that regarding employment of persons with disability and that regarding access to public buildings should be strictly enforced.

"AD also supports policies which give people with disability support in exercising their right to equality and therefore independent living. the independent living of persons with disability," Urpani said.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson added: "AD expected more expenditure on persons with disability in Government's budget for 2011. We strongly believe that  vulnerable groups such as those with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and fibromyalgia (FM) should be entitled for disability benefits. Besides, we endorse the request of NGOs working in the field of disability for the development of centres for persons with a disability through public-private partnerships, as well as the call for increased benefits given that their real value is declining due to the cost of living."
