Ten police officers ‘who were unjustly snubbed’ receive promotions

Ten police officers have been promoted after a grievances board ruled that they had been unjustly overlooked for the roles in the past.
These include constables who have been promoted to sergeants, and sergeants who have been promoted to sergenat majors. Their promotions – handed out by home affairs minister Carmelo Abela during a cermony - have been backdated to when they were originally overlooked.
A further 20 serving police officers who were unjustly overlooked are expected to receive financial compensation or see their pensions adjusted accordingly.
The police grievance board, which was set up in 2014, received 81 applications – meaning that 38% of the requests were accepted. The cases that were rejected include those dating back over seven years, those pending before the court or police board and those were injustice couldn’t be proved.
During the ceremony, Abela also formally presented the appointment letter to Laurence Cutajar as acting police commissioner, who replaces Michael Cassar.
