The Rapid Intervention Unit responded to a call yesterday evening around 21:45 in St Peter and St Paul Street in Isla where they rescued a 84-year-old man from a housefire in his home. The man’s daughter, of 49 years of age, was severely injured in the same accident.

Preliminary investigations show that the man was stuck on the top floor of his residence after his mattress caught fire. He proceeded to call for help from his balcony, which caught the attention of his neighbours. The neighbours did their best to help the elderly man until the RIU officers came and rescued the man, who was unharmed. The man’s daughter managed to escape on her own before help arrived, but she suffered severe burns around various parts of her body.

The fire was put out by the Department of Civil Protection.
