Transport and infrastructure minister Joe Mizzi decided to allocate €90,000 for this project, which he says will provide a public space in place of what was up to a few months ago an abandoned lot of land.

“The initial phases of the project involve cleaning up the area to make way for better access,” said Marvienne Camilleri, the architect in charge of the project. “One of the most important issues is how to utilise the existing pier. Measures have been taken to make sure it is accessible, especially the part facing the sea.”

She added that stairs have been built so that the area can be reached safely.

“Since this is a popular diving site, it was key to ensure safe access to it. Thus important measures were taken including adding stairs into the sea and installing hand rails.”

Other aesthetic qualities, such as indigenous trees, plants and bushes were planted around the parameter of the pier. Moreover, lights have been added to light up the area at night, as well as to ensure safety.
