Bjorn Formosa, a 29 year old Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) sufferer raised an impressive €437,462 for his organisation during Friday’s telethon on Xarabank.

The money will be used to purchase medical equipment for ALS sufferers and on research into the degenerative disease, for which there is no known cure.

Bjorn Formosa, a former IT worker. made headlines last summer when he set up the NGO ALS Malta last summer after discovering that he had contracted the disease.

During Friday’s telethon, he donated €100,000 to the group out of his own pocket, money that he had considered using to travel the world.

“When I discovered that I didn’t have long to live, I thought that I should travel the world, but then I decided to use my time to help other people,” he said. “My condition is degenerating and there is little hope left for me, but I have decided to work so that [future ALS patients] don’t suffer as I have.”

ALS Malta’s fundraising campaign will continue next Saturday during a concert ‘Beat it May’ at the Aria Complex in San Gwann.
