Junior Maltese mathletes shine in championship

Students aged between six and 15 help Malta finish third place at a global mental maths competition

A group of young Maltese students have come through an international mathematics competition with flying colours.

They achieved an overall third place for Malta in this year’s edition of the SuperTmatik Mental Maths Championship - an annual mathematics international championship for students aged between six and 15.

Celeste Grech from the National Sports School and Hayden Micallef from the Maria Regina primary school in Mellieha both finished first in their respective categories.

Kayden Farrugia Falzon from the St Ignatius College in Qormi notched up a silver medal, while Jordan Camilleri from the St Theresa College in Santa Venera placed third in his category.

The education ministry in a statement praised class teachers, senior management teams and other educators for boosting the motivation of students towards mental maths.

Top places for Maltese students are the following:

Category 1 - pupils born in 2009

5th place:    Luke Debono - St Ignatius College, Qormi San Ġorġ Primary School


8th place:    Remiro Spiteri - St Ignatius College, Qormi San Ġorġ Primary School
 


Category 2 - pupils born in 2008

9th place:   Ilenia Debono - St Ignatius College, Qormi San Ġorġ Primary School 
 


Category 3 - pupils born in 2007


1st place:     Hayden Micallef - Maria Reġina College Mellieħa Primary


2nd place:    Kayden Farrugia Falzon - St Ignatius College, Qormi San Ġorġ Primary School


6th place:   Daniel Petersons - from Maria Reġina College Mellieħa Primary


10th place:   Milena Stagno - St Nicholas College Mġarr Primary
