A group of activists who erected tents outside Castille in protest against further environmental destruction has pledged to take the necessary action whenever necessary.

Members of Kamp Emergenza Ambjent – a new movement against the destruction of the environment – camped outside the Office of the Prime Minister in a bid to attract to authorities’ attention against further environmental harm.

Castille Square was turned into a campsite as some 25 tents were erected, labeled with the names of past and present projects that have damaged or posed a threat to the environment.

“Judging by the people’s reactions to this initiative, we feel that that the message came across, and for this reason, we will be dismantling the tents soon.”

“We are satisfied that we managed to occupy a central and important space in Malta and that we have shown a strong and clear opposition to the destruction of the environment,” the activists said.

The activists said environmental destruction in Malta has reached a situation of “emergency, and Malta is being surrounded by a desert of buildings and smoke. The Kamp wants the government to withdraw plans foe the construction of a ‘university’ in Zonqor, the proposed fuel depot in Has-Saptan and the recent approval of an extension to the Ramla Bay Hotel.

“We will be following closely the projects proposed in Zonqor and Has-Saptan and any other projects which aim to decrease any land in ODZ and which endangers our environment. We are going to watch them closely and take action whenever and wherever it is necessary,” it said.
