[WATCH] Busuttil: Muscat 'scared' of stronger opposition
PN leader welcomes court decision to award two additional seats to opposition
Justice has been made with Maltese and Gozitans voters who for three years were denied from two PN seats, opposition leader Simon Busuttil said.
He said the lengthy judgement of over 140 pages states that the free and fair election had been breached, adding that this was the second time that such a judgment was delivered in three years.
“I welcome this decision which gives us two seats, two seats which we will use to strengthen the voice we are giving to citizens in parliament.”
Turning his guns on Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, he said government did all it could “to delay and deny voters, especially those on 8 and 13 districts from what is rightly theirs.”
“Muscat is scared of an opposition with 31 seats. Imagine how even scared he would be if it goes up to 33.”
Following today’s court decision to award two additional seats to the PN, Muscat immediately said he would appeal.
While recognising Labour’s right to appeal, Busuttil said this showed that Muscat wants “to deny what is the fundamental right of electorate.”
“It is their right to appeal but it will only anger people, especially those whose vote was not calculated. But this will strengthen our resolve to continue fighting for democracy,” Busuttil said.
Pointing out that the court sentence confirms that the vote counting process is flawed and called on the Electoral Commission – on which the PN has four representatives – to review the process and ensure that such errors do not take place.
