BHS in Malta to continue trading as normal

No sign of backlash for local franchise as UK company winds down with 11,000 job losses

Following the winding down on Thursday of British Home Stores (BHS) in the UK, resulting in 11,000 job losses, Bhs Malta said it was closely monitoring recent developments in the UK.

A statement issued by the directors of Camilleri Establishments Ltd, local franchise holders for BHS, said “the company, as a franchise contractor, will continue its trading operations as normal throughout its whole network of shops.”

“Serving our customers and providing them with the best shopping experience continues to be our top priority,” the statement said.

Camilleri Establishments Ltd said it was committed to continue all its trading activities, as an ongoing concern, across its retail points of sale in Malta.

Camilleri Group has four BHS shops in Malta and employs some 70 people. The company also runs two BHS shops in Tripoli, Libya.

The fate of BHS in the UK was sealed after a five week long sales process ended with no buyer being chosen.

It first went into administration in April.

BHS UK wound down 13 months after Retail Acquisitions bought the retail brand from Sir Philip Green for around €1.30 in March 2015.

A parliamentary inquiry into the collapse of BHS, and its €740m pension deficit, was launched by the British House of Commons. Sir Philip is due to give evidence to the joint committees on June 15.
