Economy Minister Chris Cardona, who is vying for the post of Labour deputy leader for party affairs, has praised the delegates and activists as being “the heart and soul” of the party.

An independent poll among the delegates has shown Cardona and Owen Bonnici almost neck and neck.

“A Labour Party is strong when it gives the merited attention to its delegates and activists, because they are the foundations of a strong Labour Party. They are the ones who strengthen our relationship with the electorate. It is in this manner that we will build strong bridges,” Cardona said, bringing his campaign to an end.

Cardona once again pledged a Labour Party that would address the injustices suffered by “people of good will” along the years.

He said, that the campaign had brought him closer to the party’s grassroots and pledged direct contact and accessibility, with frequent presence at the party’s headquarters.

Cardona pointed out that he had launched and closed his campaign in Gozo. The economy minister went on to add that he appreciated the roles played by the various branches of the party.

“Whatever happens after the election, I will remain a loyal and hardworking activist. But if the delegates choose to place their trust in me, I will be honoured to serve this post,” he said, adding that he would work harder than he has over the past 25 years.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat praised Cardona’s work in delivering projects that were sustaining the country’s economy.
