Valletta strategy unveiled for public consultation

Principal parliamentary secretary Mario Cutajar and Planning Authority CEO Johan Buttigieg have announced that the new document for the regeneration of Valletta, will be open for public consultation for the coming six weeks.

The strategy started off as a master plan, bur it collated into an action plan, and the drafting of the document included consultation with various entities.

“Valletta is a UNESCO world heritage site, but that does not mean that we can look at the city as a museum, and the plan seeks to regenerate the city beyond 2018, when it will be the EU’s capital of culture,” Cutajar said, adding that the plan sought to reinstate it as an entertainment hub.

The aim of the strategy is to give Valletta a breath of life in its culture, residential, commercial and administrative sectors.

Buttigieg said that the plan includes urban planning to encourage more residents to move to the city.

“We want to give Valletta a new life, and to spread the idea that it is not just a city where people go to work, but a place where people can live,” he said.
