Bahrija residents and those of surrounding areas will be protesting today at 19:00 to call on the authorities to solve the road works problem which has been creating inconveniences.

Road works to Bahrija’s main road of have been going on for almost two years, causing major inconvenience to the residents.

Originally, authorities planned to rebuild the main road and improve the drainage system in the locality.

However, at the very early stages of the works, very catacombs were found beneath the road.

The work had to be halted until archaeologists can study the discoveries and the authorities are reportedly considering turning the road into a walking museum.

Furthermore, it appears that road works in Bahrija are being carried out during the day only, instead of having round-the-clock-work, therefore delaying the project further.

Seemingly, the public is not against the project in itself they understand that catacombs have been discovered and it is important that these are preserved. Yet, the citizens are very concerned at a situation which is going from bad to worse.

“Delivery trucks and ambulances find it practically impossible to come into Bahrija. We have to spend extra money on petrol so as to go round and avoid all the traffic and roads in disastrous state,” one resident said.

Around 300 people are expected to attend the protest.
