Chancellor Angela Merkel to visit Malta

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to make an official visit to Malta in January.

Speaking during the House Business Committee in Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister Tonio Borg said that the German Chancellor will hold official talks at Castille with Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

The details of her scheduled one-day visit have not yet been finalised, however it was also explained that Chancellor Merkel will be arriving in Malta after visiting Cyprus.

briffy, the reason Angela is coming over is coz she's on the way home from Cyprus and Malta is right there halfway between Cyprus and Deutschland. Just like migratory birds, she'll step off, takes a piss/shit and a shower, meets with one of her asslickers, Gonzi, and flies back home. Has nothing to do with GDP, protocol, peace harmony or any other bullshit.

Those who are expecting direct financial aid from Germany are betraying their ignorance of the way the EU operates. Bilateral aid is not allowed between member states. That is why the Italian Financial Protocol was not renewed when Malta joined the EU. The financial contributions of the various EU member states go to the common pool; it is these contributions that finance the EU budget. Germany is one of the main, if not the leading, contributor to the EU budget, and Malta is a net beneficiary because its GDP per capita is lower than the EU average - I believe it's around 75%. When Malta's GDP per capita exceeds the EU average, it will be a net contributor. Viisits by Heads of States do not necessarily imply the award of financial aid; the world of diplomacy does not revolve solely around financial aid: there are lots of other matters that are addressed during such visits. They serve to strenghten ties between nations for one thing, which is indispensable for peace and harmony between peoples of different cultures. Also they are of immense help towards the success of the lobbying done by members during EU business.

So here we have it. Chancellor Merkel bringing in Gifts to the Government of Malta (for employing German companies - like the incineration plant proposed by Mr Pullicino and WasteServ) at phenomenal costs on the back of an EU Bailout. What a timely visit?

I'd trade Gonzi and Muscat for a Merkel any time, hands down

Malta our beauty of an island :) Malta covers just over 300 km² in land area, making it one of the world's smallest and most densely populated countries- hehheheeee - should have been a paradise here- **** Germany********** Germany is a federal parliamentary republic of sixteen states. The capital and largest city is Berlin. Germany is a member of the United Nations, NATO, the G8, the G20, and the OECD. It is a major power with the world's fourth largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth largest by purchasing power parity. It is the second largest exporter and third largest importer of goods. In absolute terms, Germany allocates the third biggest annual development aid budget in the world, while its military expenditure ranked seventh. The country has developed a very high standard of living and a comprehensive system of social security. It holds a key position in European affairs and maintains a multitude of close partnerships on a global level. Germany is recognised as a scientific and technological leader in several fields. not much difference- ehmmm maybe i need to wake up ?:)

briffy@maltanet you seem to be the odd one out briffy because everyone in every country sees what the country is going to gain when a foreign politician visits it. Tal Hamrija then she should help us to change the Dublin II Convention to send them back.

Let us hope thta our country will benefit from such a visit- or maybe she is doing a tour holiday and will stop for tea/coffee at the president -:]

This is the woman who recently admitted that multiculturalism has failed miserably, so why would she want more immigrants unless she and her fellow politicians are insane?

Typically Maltese colonial mentality..the world owes us a living. How much money are we getting from Merkel's visit? Why should we expect to get money our of the state visit? Malta's unemployment level is lower than Germany's .Don't we have enough in our banks - Eur5 billion? Parasitism is still ingrained in our culture.

Anything to distract us ej? Komplu bit teatrin!

Is she going to bring enough money with her to have a roof on our roofless theatre and to take all our illegal immigrants?
