AD urges publication of impact studies on LNG tanker

Carmel Cacopardo says government should publish impact studies of LNG tanker, rather than 'engage in theatrics in Singapore'

Green party Alternattiva Demokratika has called on the government to publish all impact studies in relation to the LNG tanker that has set sail for Malta from Singapore today.

“We are still awaiting the publication of studies [on how residents will be safeguarded from potential industrial and environmental disasters], as well as the reports on maritime safety in Marsaxlokk Bay” AD’s deputy chairperson Carmel Cacopardo said in a statement. “In particular, we are awaiting the studies carried out on the impacts which the stationary gas tanker will have on the current commercial activity at the Freeport, as well as on the fishing community.

"To this, one must add the impacts which the gas supplies to the tanker, around eight times per year, will have on the operation of the Port of Marsaxlokk.

“It would have been much better if instead of engaging itself in theatrics in Singapore, government explained how it intends to address these immensely important issues.”

The tanker – the Armada LNG Mediterrana – will provide liquefied natural gas tanker to the new 215MV gas-fired power station at Delimara.

The tanker, which will also provide storage facilities, is expected to berth inside Marsaxlokk harbour in September. Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has insisted that the tanker is a temporary measures, pending the construction of a gas pipeline between Malta and Italy.

Muscat and OPM minister Konrad Mizzi presided over the sail-away ceremony of the tanker earlier today
