New lane arrangement for Kappara project

Vehicles will travel closer to the perimeter walls of the residences from the petrol station towards the junction

From Thursday, vehicles going through Mikiel Anton Vassalli Street through Kappara Junction will travel on a new lane arrangement, Transport Malta has announced.

The new arrangement will see vehicles travel closer to the perimeter walls of the residences from the petrol station towards the junction.

The whole stretch of road in the opposite direction will be included within the work area perimeter as the project enters a new phase.

The Kappara contractor demolished the former ‘Cottage’ restaurant on Wednesday, making way for the road to be widened and a slipway exit enabled; the Kappara roundabout was removed earlier.

Works are also progressing at a steady pace below road level, and workers have laid the foundation and built a good percentage of the retaining walls that will support the slipway that will join Gzira to Mikiel Anton Vassalli Street.

There is still no access from Kappara towards Gzira, but most of Sliema Road remains accessible through Rue D’Argens.

The bus lanes in Sliema and Gżira have been temporarily suspended to help ease traffic exiting from Sliema area.

New road markings in Mikiel Anton Vassalli Street will be painted overnight.

Transport Malta advised motorists to avoid the area whenever possible, even though one lane in each direction would remain open during works.
