Statistics released by the National Statistics Office show a 10.7% increase in tourist arrivals for the month of July when compared to the same period last year.
A total of 196,768 trips were registered with the majority of tourists falling within the 25-44 year age bracket. The total nights spent also went up by 3.5% when compared to the same period last year.
A 47.9% increase in short visits of between 1 and 3 nights was registered with the total nights spent in private accommodation going up by 13.3% and those spent in hotels and other forms of collective accommodation going down by 3.5%.
Statistics for the period between January and July show that the increase in tourist arrivals during this period was of 9.7% when compared to same period last year. This is the first time Malta has seen over a million tourists in the first 7 months of the year. The income from tourism over this period was of €230m.
In a statement, minister Edward Zammit Lewis welcomed the results and noted that this was in fact the best July since 2010 with an extra €9.42m being injected into the Maltese economy when compared to July 2015.
He added that these results are proof of Malta’s good reputation internationally and that even though competition from neighbouring countries is harsh, Malta is still managing to attract more tourists month after month.
