Old construction material becoming scarce
An increasing scarcity of construction material composed of old stone is impeding owners of old houses in conservation areas in old villages or cities from carrying out aesthetic changes to their domiciles.
In many developments falling within such conservation zones, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority is establishing that old stone is used in extensions or new buildings as a condition, weekly newspaper Illum reports.
This applies not only for the construction of wash rooms, for example, but also even simply boundary walls on roofs. However, this regulation is causing considerable problems, the newspaper reports, as this ‘old stone’ is becoming ever-more scarce.
