An investigation has been launched by the government after part of the floor at a newly-built water treatment plant in Tac-Cumnija in Mellieha collapsed on Thursday during testing.

In a statement, Water Services Corporation said testing was being carried out in an area that is planned to filter treated sewage water when a section of the floor collapsed.

The corporation said it had launched an investigation to determine what led to the incident.

In a separate statement, the ministry within the Office of the Prime Minister said it had appointed a number of experts to investigate the reasons behind the structural damage caused at the plant.

The investigation was tasked with analysing the situation and determining the sequence of events that led to the floor collapse.
