Montebello Brothers sell unfinished Galaxy hotel site

Stagnant water from a five-storey hole adjacent to the Montebello brothers’ Belmonte Heights being removed after the site was sold to a consortium of new owners.

The sale was confirmed by Sliema councillor Julian Galea, who met the new owners who committed themselves to remove the stagnant water and to set up rat traps to control a rat and mosquito infestation denounced by residents in the area.

Galea said work to clear the stagnant water had started during the weekend.

Alternattiva Demokratika had previously denounced the presence of Asian tiger mosquitoes in the stagnant water. The health minister has also initiated legal action against developers JPM Bros Ltd, who have been summoned to appear in front of the Court on the 16 December.

A written notice ordering the owners of the site to remove the stagnant water had been sent on 14 October 2010. After this notice was ignored, the department initiated legal action against the owners.

The Sliema Local Council has been putting pressure on the developers and the authorities to take immediate action.
