Tourism Minister highlights growing importance of local aviation sector

Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis has declared that is "imperative" that the local aviation sector remain on a path of growth and welcomed the increasing seaplane traffic in Maltese ports, describing it as a testament to the government's commitment to expanding the niche sector, which is becoming an increasingly important contributor to Malta's economic success. 

The minister made the comments as he attended the arrival of participants in the Malta Seaplanes rally at the Valletta Grand Harbour.

“The return of seaplanes, flying to and from our ports, clearly demonstrates our commitment in cooperation with the Malta Seaplanes Association, to finally re-commence seaplane operations locally, while also actively developing the required range of services around this new niche”, said the Tourism Minister.

Two amphibious aircraft participated in the 3000 Km trial from Como in Northern Italy to Malta, flying over the Grand Harbour upon arrival and landing in the water, mid-way between Pinto Wharf and Senglea Point.

Minister Zammit Lewis explained the main objectives within the Government’s vision for the aviation industry were to transform Malta into a more attractive jurisdiction for institutions willing to finance aviation-related operations while attracting companies operating in the leasing environment, as well as to ensure the availability of skilled personnel and improve the infrastructure available to companies interested in expanding or establishing operations in Malta.

Zammit Lewis stressed the importance of catering for both current and future demands of the industry, encouraging both young people to join the sector as well as calling on experienced workers willing to widen their skillset.

The Minister said that the creation of an indigenous aviation sector has only been possible through the coordinated implementation of a long-term strategy requiring the participation of a cross-section of stakeholders, including the public sector, local and foreign investors, technical innovators, academia, and a competent workforce which is constantly learning and adapting.
