Transport Malta allocates 20 new taxi licenses

Transport Malta today allotted 20 new taxi licenses, following the issue of a call for interested parties to register for a new taxi license.

A total of 72 applicants satisfied the eligibility criteria, 58 of which submitted an offer, in accordance with Regulation 22(4) of the Taxi Services Regulations.

The highest bid placed was of €105,000 whilst the 20th bid was of €40,000. The 20th bid had to be drawn by lot as 5 bidders submitted the same amount. The minimum bid was set at €20,000.

The allotting of 20 taxi licenses this year forms part of the taxi sector reform, and a total of 50 new licenses by 2012.

The bids were opened during a public session held in the offices of Transport Malta in front of Transport Malta officials, Government Notaries, the general public and members of the media.

Transport Malta shall be notifying the new licensees if their bid has been accepted. The successful bidders will be expected to apply for the actual registration of the Taxi car for which the new Taxi License will be issued within 6 months from being notified.

New license holders should ensure that the vehicles that they present for registration conform to all the conditions set out in the Taxi Services Regulations.

Why are licenses still being bid for? Aren't we supposed to have liberalized everything?
