Don’t spoil Christmas for St Julian’s residents, youths urged

'We appreciate your smile. What we do not appreciate is your vandalism, your shouting, your fights, your used condoms and your vomit on our doorsteps'

With the festive season in full swing, St Julian’s and Paceville are once again expected to become a hotspot for youths reveling and making merry in the streets.

With this in mind, St Julians’ councilors are urging youths not to take  their celebrations overboard and to respect the town’s residents.

“Many elderly residents have complained to me recently about youths vandalizing their property and vomiting on their doorsteps,” St Julian’s deputy mayor Albert Buttigieg told MaltaToday. “We are not telling youths not to enjoy themselves, only for them not to spoil the Christmas of the people who live there.”

Buttigieg on Friday launched a social media campaign composed of images urging youths to respect St Julian’s residents.

One reads: “We do appreciate your smile. What we do not appreciate is your vandalism, your shouting, your fights, your used condoms and your vomit on our doorsteps.”

Another states: “Don’t drink and drive. Don’t drink and vomit…on our doorsteps.”

St Julians’ council minority leader Martin Sultana on Facebook called for such signs to be displayed in the centre of Spinola and the surrounding streets.

Meanwhile, home affairs minister Carmelo Abela announced earlier today that police will intensify road checks and breathalyzer tests during the festive period to clamp down on drunk driving.

Breathalyzer tests will be carried out during both day and night, and sniffer dogs will also be deployed to the streets.
