An embryo incubator at Mater Dei Hospital developed a technical fault, prompting the Health Minister to launch an independent inquiry into the matter.

The embryos - which according to media reports totalled eight - were ready for implantation, as part of the IVF process.

Health Minister Chris Fearne said that the inquiry should establish the facts into the case.

The ministry said that the Embryo Protection Authority was informed. “It appears that all embryos remained viable. All involved couples were informed and, on the advice of medical expects, the IVF process continued,” the ministry said.
