Road fatalities double in 2016
The number of recorded fatalities from road accidents increased from 11 to 22 in 2016

The number of fatalities from road traffic accidents doubled in 2016, increasing to 22 from 11 in 2015, according to data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO)
On the whole, the number of reported traffic accidents in 2016 decreased by 1.7% - 42 accidents every day. Minor traffic accidents saw a reduction of 2.3%, while the number of reported casualties saw an increase of 8.3%.
The Northern Harbour district registered the highest number of traffic accidents with 5,783 cases or 37.9% of the total.
Birkirkara saw the largest number of traffic accidents in 2016, with 8% of accidents being reported in the locality.
October – December 2016
The number of reported traffic accidents in the fourth quarter of 2016 reached 3,392, down by 9% over the same period in 2015. There were five traffic fatalities recorded during this period – three caused by motorcycles, one by a passenger car and another by a goods-carrying vehicle.
The highest traffic casualty rate occurred on Thursdays while the highest number of recorded accidents took place on Friday.
