Seasonal flu jab now protects against N1H1

As the World Health Organisation is now categorising the H1N1 virus strain as part of the ‘regular’ seasonal flu, the flu vaccination will from this year protect against the strain.

The N1H1 virus, dubbed ‘swine flu’, was at the root of a global outbreak that first appeared in April 2009 in Mexico. According to WHO statistics, the virus has killed more than 18,000 people since it appeared in April 2009, approximately 4 pre cent of the 250,000 to 500,000 annual influenza deaths

In a statement, the Health Division urged the public, particularly those who are more vulnerable (such as the elderly, or those afflicted with chronic disease) to ensure that they receive the seasonal flu vaccine –this year designed to protect against the N1H1 virus as well.

“One should also take normal precautions,” the Health Division also warned, “such as avoiding crowds and unnecessary contact with people sick with flu, as well as regular hand-washing.”

It added that persons suspected of being sick with flu should contact seek medical advice from their respective doctors and stay indoors.

“Every year, we have deaths due to seasonal flu,” the Health Division reminded. “This year, an elderly British tourist who was vacationing in Malta died due to H1N1 following complications.” Another person is receiving care and is currently stable.
