Hundreds of people have flocked to Salina to attend an open day organised by the Ministry for Sustainable Development, the Environment and Climate Change and BirdLife Malta. The organisers said that those attending will have the opportunity to explore is-Salina Nature Reserve as well the salt pans in the area.

In 2016, the BirdLife Malta signed an agreement with the Government to turn Salina into a nature reserve, with the open day being the first opportunity for the public to visit the site.

Activities at the open day include birdwatching, guided tours of the area and pony rides. The NGO will also be organising salt-production demonstrations, on-stage entertainment and an artist’s corner.

There will also be a train running between the Malta National Aquarium and Salina which will allow visitors to visit the aquarium - at a reduced price for the day - before making their way to the open day.

A food court and open air cafeteria serving traditional Maltese food have been set up at is-Salina Nature Reserve.
