Busuttil promises national infrastructure overhaul, including metro
Opposition leader said a tunnel linking Malta and Gozo would only be included in the plan if geological studies currently underway confirmed the project was feasible
A Nationalist government would embark on the country’s most comprehensive infrastructure overhaul ever that will include an underground and above-ground metro system, opposition leader Simon Busuttil announced on Wednesday.
Speaking at a party activity in Qrendi, Busuttil said that a new PN government would invest hundreds of millions of Euros in a long-term plan aimed at improving the country’s infrastructure.
The plans will include major new innovations, featuring a new multi-faceted transport system.
“This new system will be planned to integrate with other existing methods of transport to provide full coverage across the entire island,” Busuttil said.
He said that a tunnel linking Malta and Gozo would also be included in the plan, but only if geological studies currently underway confirmed the project was feasible.
“For the past four years, this government has wasted a lot of money making some people richer and as a result our country’s infrastructure now resembles that in third-world countries,” Busuttil said.
Labour Party reaction
In a statement, the Labour Party said the opposition leader could only promise to turn back the clock and take Malta back to the days of the disastrous transport system that was the norm under previous administrations.
The people had shown Busuttil in the last election that they preferred the system being implemented by the government, the statement read.
