Malta to raise Egypt church bombing at EU ministers’ meeting

While unreservedly condemning the attack on a Christian church in Egypt on New Year’s Day that left 21 dead, the government of Malta plans to raise the issue during the next EU Foreign Affairs Ministers meeting later this month.

In a statement, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said he shall be writing to Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission about the intention of Malta to raise such issue.

Borg said that Malta will raise the issue of the attack against worshipers at Coptic Church in Alexandria, Egypt and other attacks against Christian communities around the globe.

Borg said that the Government of Malta is “deeply saddened by the news of the attack against worshipers at the Coptic Church in Alexandria that killed and injured a large number of innocent civilians.”

He condemned unreservedly the attack against “innocent Copt worshipers” and expressed his deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the victims, and to the Egyptian Authorities. He lauded the efforts of the Egyptian authorities in fighting terrorism and extremist groups and expressed the hope those responsible are apprehended and that religious worship is secured.
