Sixth woman to be appointed magistrate in four years
Yana Micallef Stafrace will be appointed as magistrate today, bringing the number of women in the judiciary up to 20
Yana Micallef Stafrace will today become the sixth woman to be appointed as magistrate to the inferior court of since 2013, bringing the total number of women in the judiciary to 20.
Micallef Stafrace graduated from the University of Malta in 1986 and has been a practicing lawyer since 1987, after spending a year training in Italy.
She has served as chairperson of the domestic violence commission, chairperson of the small claims tribunal, chairperson of the industrial tribunal, as well as a member of the permanent commission against corruption.
Her nomination has been approved by the Judicial Appointments Committee and cabinet.
Since 2013, Charmaine Galea, Joanne Vella Cuschieri, Monica Vella, Donatella Frendo Dimech and Caroline Farrugia Frendo were appointed to the court of magistrates while Edwina Grima and Miriam Hayman were appointed as judges of the superior courts.
