NGOs called to apply for funds for climate change projects in Africa
Expressions of interest are now open to NGOs wishing to undertake projects in the area of climate change in African countries as part of Fast-Start finance.
The Copenhagen Accord contains a commitment by developed countries to provide developing countries with fast-start financing for the period 2010 – 2012 in relation to projects that will help them address climate change in the near future as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The Maltese government has joined the European response and is committing funds to combat climate change.
Countries that have been identified as priority for these projects include Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda and Mali, though other countries in the region have not been excluded.
Preference will be given by an adjudication board to projects that enable poor communities to build their resilience to climatic variability and to adapt to long-term climate change, while pursuing sustainable development. Such projects include water management projects, drought resistant agriculture and efficient use of energy for cooking.
Expressions of interest should reach the Directorate General for Economic and European Affairs by 31 January 2011.
