Medicines Authority aids consumers in choosing the right medication
The Medicine Authority has launched a campaign in a bid to increase information sought by patients before taking medications.
According to research conducted by telephone interviewers by the Medicine Authority (MA) over 60% of the Maltese population read the information leaflets when taking medication for the first time.
Over 85% do not know the difference between originator and generic medicines and up to 3% order medication off the internet, putting them in danger.
Dr Patricia Vella Bonnano, CEO of the MA released these statistics at a press conference launching initiatives encouraging consumers to seek information before taking medication in order to make a more informed decision as to what medications to take, how to store them and what times of day to be taking the medication.
“The information we are providing is there to support advice from doctors and pharmacists to ensure patients are receiving the safe and efficient treatment.”
Information is available on the MA’s website www.knowyourmedicines.gov.mt. Leaflets have been distributed to pharmacies and homes through local councils, a facebook page has also been set up as well as a helpline available to all consumers.
Parliamentary Secretary for consumers and fair competition, Chris Said, who was visiting the MA, said that Malta the MA had authorised 550 medicines in 2010. The 25 manufacturers and importers, 70 wholesalers and 200 pharmacies fall under the remit of the MA.
“These are the first steps being taken to ensure that the consumer makes an informed decision on what medications they are taking.”
