Former PL Councillor had fight in Attard party club

Former Labour Councillor John Bonnici, appeared before Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit as she continued to hear evidence about an alleged fight he was involved in at the Attard Labour club.

Bonnici is being accused of having caused slight injuries to Richard Vella during the alleged fight.

Former Police Sergeant Mario Mifsud testified how back in October of 2009 he was stationed in Birkirkara, and at around 10.30pmhe received a report of a fight in the Labour Party club in Attard.

Upon arriving, barman Patrick Sammut told him that Bonnici had gone into the club in a drunken state. So as to avoid any arguments, Sammut and Vella had asked Bonnici to leave the bar.

It appears that when the two closed the door behind him, Bonnici kicked the door and fell to the floor. Bonnici later alleged that the two had beaten him up.

Despite not having been present on the night the fight took place, former Club President Simone Buhagiar also testified in court.

She said Bonnici had talked to her on the phone where he told her that certain things had to be fixed so as to avoid further arguments between members of the same party. She told him that she knew of no cause of disagreement between them and couldn't understand why he had told her so.

Bonnici and Buhagiar had agreed to meet up and clear things up. However this never happened. Buhagiar said she had warned Vella that if such arguments kept occurring the the matter would be handed over to the police.

Buhagiar also testified that on the December 27, whilst preparing for the children's Christmas party, Bonnici had gone into the club drunk again, shaking his fist and swearing at the barman.

The children's party had to be held in the presence of the police.

Former Secretary of the club, Victor Mamo claimed that the incident had been long looming on the horizon. It appears that Vella would not leave Bonnici alone and kept interfering in his matters. Vella claims Bonnici had been named as the club’s Director provided he had nothing to do with the bar.

 The case continues.
