Government to increase bed space at Mater Dei

Government promised to increase bed space by 150 beds by the end of the year, 50 of which will be available by the end of February.

During an informal meeting between Health Minister Joe Cassar and the President of the Emergency Nurses Union (ENU) John Zammit discussions took place to address the problems faced by emergency nurses where patients were being kept waiting for up to 18 hours before being admitted into the main hospital area.

Government also promised to find an alternative waiting area for these patients whilst they waited for a bed to avoid closing down of wards in the emergency departments to act as holding bays as has been the procedure over the past few weeks.

The ENU will be holding further meetings to discuss developments with hospital administration staff and representatives from the Ministry of Health.

I would like to ask our Government what would have been the situation had the PN stuck to its idea of building a 400 bed Hospital ?. Only a few weeks ago we had our wizard Dr.Tonio Fenech criticising Labour for doubling the number of beds in its short stint in Government. He did this on a Monday in a TV discussion programme . Unfortunately we are being led by a gang of irresponsible and incompetent dilettantes .

What does a billion euroes buy you ? Not enough beds apparently. Wonder if they had enough beds eddie fenech adami went to the best hospitals in the US for his treatment. Wonder if the inland revenue asked him how he could afford it compared to his declared income.
