Not much playing going on at Marsaskala playground
Despite repeated complaints that the Marsaskala playground is in a state of disrepair and that local kids have nowhere to play, repairs won’t be carried out before Summer 2011 earliest.
Both tourists and locals visiting the site, one of Malta’s touristically attractive areas, have repeatedly voiced concerns about the down-turn the area was taking to the detriment of the locality’s community.
Contacted by weekly newspaper Illum, Marsaskala Mayor Mario Calleja said that the council’s plan is that the playground will be repaired by next month. “The council intends to invest between €190,000 to €200,000 in new playground equipment,” Calleja said.
He explained how during a council meeting on Thursday, councillors unanimously agreed that the council should apply for funds under the Urban Improvement Fund (UIF).
He maintained that a land surveyor will be taking the necessary measurements for the call for expression (for the works) that will be eventually be issued. Calleja said that it was also decided that the paving, light fittings, and benches do not need to be changed.
Currently, the only playground equipment present on site are four kinds of swings for children for different ages, a set of climbing hoops, a merry-go-round, and a slide for very young children – all in need of a new paint-job and some also in need of maintenance and repair.
A number of Illum residents also complained about the way a fountain on the playground has been left to stagnate and is attracting breeding mosquitoes.
