NSO| 889,319 travelled between Malta and Gozo
Between October and December of 2010, sea transport between Malta and Gozo registered increases in vehicles and commuters when compared to the corresponding period in 2009.
According to the National Statistics Office (NSO), during the fourth quarter of 2010, commuters between Malta and Gozo increased by 7.7% totalling 889,319 when compared to the same period in the previous year.
Concurrently, the number of vehicles carried by scheduled vessels went up by 5.3% totalling 255,996.
The statistics reveal that the highest number of commuters was recorded in October, totalling 343,054 marking 38.6% of the total for the quarter period.
Overall, 2010 saw an increase in commuters, trips and vehicles carried between Malta and Gozo. The number of trips went up by 81 (0.4%) over 2009 whilst the number of commuters registered an increase of 6.3% (239,439) over the previous year.
The total number of vehicles carried between Malta and Gozo in 2010 increased by 35,039 (3.3%)
Unsurprisingly, August was the month in which the highest number of trips was recorded - 2,066 or 10.3% of total trips. August also registered the highest number of vehicles and commuters carried between the two islands - 125,377 and 500,237 respectively.
