Malta’s university opens its doors to 11,733 students

Over 3,912 new students joined the University of Malta today, bringing the total number of students at all levels to 11,733

The University of Malta today marked the official opening of Academic Year 2017-2018, welcoming a total of 11,733 students – 3,912 of which are joining the University for the first time.

2,696 students will be registering for undergraduate courses, while 1,216 students will be reading for postgraduate degrees.  A total of 929 international students representing 102 different countries will be pursuing studies at the University.

Of the 11,733 students, almost 7,000 are female. A total of 942 courses are being delivered.

A number of new courses are being offered by the University, including a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Biochemistry and a Master of Arts in International Humanitarian Action.

The Junior College will also see 867 new students, bringing the total number of students to 1,942.

In addressing the students, University Rector Alfred J Vella reiterated the importance of research and the importance of constantly questioning knowledge.s

“The aim of research should not only be to address important industry needs, but should also be undertaken with the premise that knowledge is something which has not been, and can never be, completely discoverable,” the Professor encouraged the students during Freshers’ Week.

The Rector also spoke about plagiarism, and advised students to not plagiarise the work of others.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat also visited the campus this morning, meeting some of the students’ organisations and wishing them luck for the academic year.

On her part, PN MP and shadow education minister Therese Comodini Cachia wished all students a fruitful year and encouraged them to take part in voluntary organisations.
